The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged assault of students of the Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College by officers of the Ghana Police Service during a demonstration over poor welfare conditions on campus.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2026, when nursing trainees staged a protest to draw attention to what they described as deteriorating living and learning conditions at the college.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, and signed by NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim, the union expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that the students had resorted to demonstrating only after repeated attempts to engage college management failed to produce results.
According to NUGS, the protest was triggered by several longstanding welfare concerns, including poor quality of meals, unsanitary conditions and an alleged lack of effective communication between the college management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
The union maintained that the demonstration was peaceful and organised only after all internal avenues for dialogue had been exhausted.
Condemning the reported actions of the police, NUGS stressed that the 1992 Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and that students retain those constitutional rights while on campus.
“NUGS strongly condemns the reported assault on these students. The use of force against unarmed students who were peacefully expressing their concerns is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society,” the statement said.
While acknowledging the Ghana Police Service’s responsibility to maintain law and order, the union insisted that officers must carry out their duties professionally and with full respect for human rights and human dignity.
NUGS has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to launch a thorough and independent investigation into the incident and ensure that any officers found to have acted unlawfully are held accountable.
The union also urged the Ministry of Health and the management of Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College to provide immediate medical care for students who sustained injuries during the incident.
In addition, NUGS called on the college authorities and the Ministry of Health to urgently address the welfare concerns that sparked the protest, arguing that students deserve a safe learning environment, responsive leadership and adequate support.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation closely and engaging relevant stakeholders until justice is served and lasting solutions are implemented to address the challenges facing students at the institution.
