The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has responded to concerns raised by Professor Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, regarding the investigation into former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta. Gyampo had expressed hopes that the probe was driven by patriotism rather than personal vendetta.
“I hope the OSP is not motivated by vendetta but out of patriotism,” Prof. Gyampo said on TV3, adding that any motivation other than patriotic would damage the Special Prosecutor’s reputation. However, the OSP rejected these insinuations, stating that its actions are based on allegations of corruption and corruption-related offenses.
“The OSP wishes to place on record that its actions involving the former Finance Minister are based on stated allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences, particularly abuse of office for profit, including the multi-year contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML),” the OSP stated.
Interestingly, the OSP revealed that Gyampo had contacted their office while a legal search of SML’s premises was being conducted with support from National Security operatives. “Incidentally, the said CEO called and sent messages to the Office in respect of SML while officers of the OSP and National Security were still conducting a legal search of SML’s premises,” the statement added.
The OSP cautioned public officials against interfering with ongoing investigations, warning that unfounded public statements could undermine the fight against corruption. “It cautions public officials to refrain from interfering—whether directly or through unfounded public statements—with ongoing investigations. Such actions have the potential to undermine the fight against corruption.”
The investigation centers on allegations of financial impropriety linked to Ofori-Atta’s time in office, including controversies surrounding the Agyapa Royalties deal and a multi-year contract awarded to SML.
