Parliament of Ghana has confirmed that it is working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands following reports that Independent Member of Parliament, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House disclosed that it had been officially informed about the incident involving the Asante Akyem North MP.
According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House are currently engaging Ghana’s Mission in The Hague to obtain comprehensive details surrounding the matter.
“The Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter,” the statement noted.
Parliament, however, did not provide details on the circumstances leading to Mr Frimpong’s detention, nor did it indicate whether any charges had been filed against him.
The development has generated significant public and political interest as efforts continue to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Kwame Ohene Frimpong entered Parliament on January 7, 2025, after winning the 2024 parliamentary election as an Independent candidate. His victory was considered one of the major upsets of the election, as he defeated former New Patriotic Party MP Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi.
Before venturing into politics, Mr Frimpong was widely known as an entrepreneur and philanthropist with business interests across Ghana. Born on September 23, 1986, he has emerged as one of the few Independent voices in the current Parliament.
No further official information has been released regarding his situation in the Netherlands.
