Parliament is set to resume sitting today, Monday, August 24, following a recall by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to enable the House to consider urgent parliamentary business.
The special sitting will run for five days, from Monday, August 24 to Friday, August 28, at Parliament House in Accra. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at noon today.
The recall was issued by the Speaker on Wednesday, August 12, pursuant to Order 58(4) of the Standing Orders of Parliament. However, the Speaker did not specify the particular matters to be considered during the special sitting.
The recall comes amid several ministerial nominations awaiting consideration by the House.
President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Klottey Korle Member of Parliament, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology following the death of the substantive minister, Murtala Mohammed.
The President has also nominated Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. In addition, two other ministers have been reassigned to new portfolios.
The nominations were submitted to Parliament on Friday, August 7, in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires presidential ministerial nominees to obtain parliamentary approval before assuming office.
The House is therefore expected to devote part of its five-day sitting to the consideration of the nominations, including the vetting of the nominees and subsequent parliamentary decisions on their approval or rejection.
The special sitting comes as Parliament prepares to address a range of pressing matters, with the specific agenda expected to become clearer once proceedings commence today.
