Parliament will investigate the reported US$1.7 billion, about GH¢22 billion, loss under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) to bring clarity to the controversy surrounding the transactions, Speaker Alban Bagbin has said.
The Speaker’s assurance comes after the Minority Caucus filed a motion demanding a parliamentary probe into the alleged loss and calling for the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, to be summoned to account for the transactions.
According to Mr Bagbin, the inquiry by Parliament will establish whether the US$1.7 billion in question is a genuine financial loss or a policy cost associated with the implementation of the DGPP.
He disclosed that the motion, which reached his office on August 21, 2026, will be admitted for debate.
“With the motion they have filed, which was received in my office on the 21st of August, 2026, just three days ago, I have gone through the motion myself and I intend to admit the motion because we have to at least have an end to litigation as to whether it’s a loss or it’s a cost,” he stated.
Mr Bagbin said the parliamentary process will give members the chance to interrogate the matter and clear the air on the disputed figure.”This House will have the opportunity to go through it.
And please, Ghanaians are very intelligent people. They will listen, they will read in between the lines and they will make their decisions,” he added.
