Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Awentami Afoko is set to formally enter the next phase of his bid to reclaim the party’s National Chairmanship position when he submits his completed nomination forms on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Mr Afoko is expected at the NPP headquarters in Accra to file his nomination documents, after collecting the forms when nominations opened on August 18.
His submission will take place within an extended filing period announced by the NPP National Officers Elections Committee. The committee has moved the deadline for the submission of completed nomination forms from August 27 to August 29, citing strong interest from aspirants seeking various national executive positions.
Mr Afoko announced his intention to return to the National Chairmanship race in July, setting the stage for his renewed attempt to lead the party.
His campaign is built around a three-pronged “3R Agenda” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture. The agenda seeks to address internal divisions within the party, strengthen its organisational structures and position the NPP to regain political power in the 2028 general election.
As part of his campaign, Mr Afoko has been engaging delegates and grassroots members in different parts of the country. He has consistently presented reconciliation and party unity as essential to rebuilding the NPP following its defeat in the 2024 elections.
His latest bid for the chairmanship is particularly significant because of his previous tenure in the position. Mr Afoko served as NPP National Chairman before being removed from office following a prolonged internal dispute that became one of the party’s major controversies at the time.
The filing of his nomination forms will allow Mr Afoko to proceed formally through the party’s electoral process, subject to vetting and other requirements.
Under the current timetable, aspirants will undergo vetting from August 31 to September 3, with the outcome expected to be announced on September 5. The appeals process is scheduled for September 6 and 7.
The final decision will be made by NPP delegates at the national elections scheduled for October 3, 2026, when aspirants for the party’s national executive positions will face the electorate.
