Police personnel stationed at the Nkwanta–Breweniase barrier along the Eastern Corridor in Ghana’s Oti Region have intercepted a large cache of ammunition and arrested two suspects believed to be involved in its illegal transportation.
The operation occurred during routine security checks when officers stopped a MAN Togo cargo truck with registration number GW 9927–13, which was en route from Accra (Tema Station) to Damanko in the Nkwanta North District.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered more than 11,000 rounds of ammunition, alongside a foreign-made firearm. The items retrieved include 7,000 AA cartridges, 3,000 BB cartridges, and 1,124 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
The driver of the truck, identified as 26-year-old Kende Richard, and his assistant, 20-year-old Latif Adam, were immediately arrested and are currently in custody assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Police Service, through the Nkwanta South Command, is supporting ongoing investigations aimed at determining the source of the ammunition, its intended destination, and any wider network potentially linked to the consignment.
The interception forms part of heightened security operations in the Nkwanta Municipality, where authorities have intensified surveillance due to recurring security concerns and tensions in parts of the area. Officials say the increased vigilance is intended to curb the movement of weapons and ammunition that could contribute to conflict or criminal activity.
Meanwhile, members of the public have commended the officers involved for their alertness and professionalism, which led to the successful seizure and arrests. Investigations are ongoing.
