The Ghana Police Service has tasked its internal watchdog, the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), to examine allegations of police brutality against artist Ibrahim Mahama in Tamale, Norhern Region.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh-Yohuno ordered the probe, announced on the force’s social media platform on March 21, amid widespread outrage.
According to police, the PPSB inquiry will run parallel to a criminal investigation led by the Northern Regional Command. This dual-track approach underscores efforts to ensure officer accountability and investigate the incident. Artist Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, claims officers raided a bus, forced him to unlock his phone, and deleted data, calling it a rights violation.
He’s receiving treatment at a private hospital. The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf Mboridiba, condemned the incident, assuring REGSEC would not tolerate lawlessness.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau probes misconduct and human rights abuses by officers. The IGP’s move signals heightened scrutiny, addressing growing public concern. The outcome of both probes will be communicated later
