Large parts of the Volta, Oti and Tema Regions were plunged into darkness on Thursday, April 23, 2026, following a combination of technical challenges from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and multiple network faults affecting electricity supply.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (Electricity Company of Ghana) confirmed that the outage in the Volta and Oti Regions was caused by a technical fault on a transmission line at the Asiekpe Bulk Supply Point operated by GRIDCo.
Communities affected include Ho, Kpeve, Tsito, Kpando, Hohoe, Kadjebi, Jasikan, Nkwanta, Dambai and surrounding areas.
In a statement, the ECG said power would be restored once GRIDCo resolves the fault, assuring customers that engineers are working to stabilise supply. The company apologised for the inconvenience caused.
In a separate incident, a transformer fault in the Tema Region also disrupted electricity supply to several communities, including Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Akrade, Senchi, Atimpoku, Asutsuare, Volivo, Juapong, Akwamufie, Frankadua, Boso, Anum, and surrounding areas, as well as facilities such as the Commandos Military Training Camp and Golden Exotics.
ECG said technical teams have been deployed to address the fault and restore supply as quickly as possible.
Additionally, an upstream network challenge further affected parts of the Tema Region, compounding the outages, though no timeline was immediately given for full restoration.
The simultaneous disruptions across the three regions left residents and businesses struggling, with many relying on generators or temporarily halting operations.
ECG has urged affected customers to remain calm as engineers work to restore power, adding that further updates will be communicated as repairs progress.
