A leading advocate of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has called on President John Dramani Mahama to instruct Parliament to fast-track the legislation, pointing to the President’s recent intervention in halting efforts to remove the Special Prosecutor as evidence of his influence over parliamentary processes.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Rev. Ntim Fordjour argued that the President has already demonstrated his ability to guide parliamentary leadership when necessary and should do the same for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill if he considers it a national priority.
“President Mahama can also issue a directive that this is a bill that is a priority indeed, if it is. So they should expedite it immediately and with urgency, pass it,” he said.
Fordjour referenced a recent episode in which the Majority Leader and Chief Whip introduced a private member’s bill seeking the removal of the Special Prosecutor. According to him, President Mahama intervened and ordered the withdrawal of the process, with Members of Parliament complying within hours.
He maintained that a similar level of urgency could be applied to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, noting that it does not require further revisions. “That was an old bill. We haven’t changed anything in it,” he said, adding that Parliament has already fast-tracked multiple bills since January 2025, with some passed on the same day they were introduced.
The remarks follow comments made by President Mahama during a March 30 engagement with civil society organisations, where he acknowledged the bill’s significance but indicated that it is not among the government’s immediate priorities. This position was later reinforced by a government spokesperson, who stated that the bill is not currently a priority for the administration.
