Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has attributed Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the early injury suffered by defender Marvin Senaya, saying the setback disrupted the team’s defensive organisation at a crucial stage of the match.
The defeat on Friday night ended Ghana’s World Cup campaign, with an early goal from Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias securing victory and a place in the Round of 16 for the South Americans.
Speaking after the match, Queiroz said the forced substitution of Senaya altered the team’s defensive structure and created the opening that Colombia exploited.
“The moment Senaya came off, the team did not have the same discipline and organisation. It took Alidu Seidu a few minutes to adjust, and they took advantage of that moment to score,” he said.
Senaya was forced off with an injury early in the first half and was replaced by Alidu Seidu. Shortly after the change, Arias finished off a well-worked move to score what proved to be the decisive goal.
Queiroz suggested that the unexpected defensive reshuffle unsettled his side and allowed Colombia to capitalise during a brief period of disorganisation.
Despite responding positively after conceding, the Black Stars struggled to break down a disciplined Colombian defence. Colombia controlled large spells of the contest and restricted Ghana to few clear-cut scoring opportunities.
The victory sent Colombia through to the Round of 16, while Ghana’s campaign came to an end after reaching the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Queiroz’s side had hoped to extend Ghana’s impressive run at the tournament, but the early setback ultimately proved decisive as the four-time African champions were unable to find an equaliser.
The defeat concludes Ghana’s World Cup journey, with attention now expected to turn to the team’s upcoming international fixtures and the next phase of its rebuilding process.
