The Rent Commission has warned the University of Ghana (UG) to suspend its proposed 26% increase in hostel fees or risk legal action.
Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku said the Commission was seeking legal advice from the Attorney-General on possible steps to secure an injunction against the planned increment.
He stressed that no institution was above the law and urged the university to reconsider the proposed increase.
The warning sets the stage for a potential legal dispute between the Commission and the university over the planned adjustment to student accommodation fees.
Meanwhile, University of Ghana students are preparing to stage a protest on Friday to demand an immediate reversal of the proposed increment.
The students have criticised the planned increase, describing it as the commercialisation of on-campus accommodation and expressing concerns about its impact on their ability to afford hostel facilities.
The protest is expected to intensify pressure on university authorities to reconsider the decision as the Rent Commission explores possible legal measures to halt the increment.
