Persistent flooding threatens to compromise security at Sekondi Central Prison and could spark inmate breakouts, Prisons Operations Director, Benedict Bob Dery, has cautioned.
He raised the alarm while briefing Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, on Friday, May 29. He linked the problem to ongoing roadworks across Sekondi-Takoradi.
Contractors on the Takoradi-Sekondi road project tied a major drainage channel into a smaller existing gutter, he explained.
The mismatch now forces runoff into the prison compound whenever rains are heavy.“The facility is aged. Constant water intrusion erodes cell walls and creates escape risks. Beyond security, we face major public health threats,” Mr. Dery said.
He urged swift action to stop the flooding and prevent further structural damage to the prison.
