Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has pushed back against early chatter regarding the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) next presidential candidate, urging party faithful to prioritise governance over succession manoeuvres.
Speaking on The KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that the NDC was voted into power to tackle Ghana’s pressing issues, not to commence campaigning for the 2028 election merely two years into its tenure. She characterised premature discussions about who will lead the party in the next polls as a diversion that betrays the confidence Ghanaians reposed in the administration.
When asked directly whether she plans to run for the NDC’s flagbearer slot, the Vice President responded that the party’s electoral fortunes in future would hinge on its performance and the backing it affords President John Dramani Mahama to execute his agenda.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang recalled that the NDC’s triumph in the 2024 general election was the fruit of years of toil and a gruelling campaign conducted despite lean financial means.
“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president who’s leading the charge. And it depends on the quality of support we are giving.
“And if we are already going left or right, and centre and back, and it’s not even time, I think it’s a betrayal of the course of the people, and I don’t think it is right. So please help us to fulfill the dreams of this beautiful country. Let’s focus on getting the job done,” she said.
