The Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Ghana, Patricia Obo-Nai, has announced that the company will provide free coding training for 100,000 young people under the government’s One Million Coders Programme.
Speaking on Super Morning Show on Joy FM on Thursday, March 12, she said the initiative forms part of the company’s contribution to developing digital skills among Ghanaian youth.
According to her, the coding course normally costs about US$50 for participants who want to obtain certification. However, Telecel Ghana will fully sponsor the training for all participants under the programme.
“We are partnering with the government on the One Million Coders programme. We are training 100,000 people for free as our contribution,” she said.
Ms Obo-Nai explained that the training will be delivered through a partnership with the coding platform Start Your Code, describing the initiative as a major investment in digital education.
She noted that the sponsorship represents an estimated US$5 million contribution toward skills development in Ghana.
The programme is aimed at equipping young people with coding and digital technology skills to prepare them for opportunities in the future workforce.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts by the government of Ghana to expand access to technology training across the country.
During the launch of the programme in Accra in April 2025, President John Dramani Mahama revealed that about 90,000 people had applied within 48 hours of the application portal opening.
He said the strong response reflected the growing demand for digital skills among Ghanaian youth.
According to the President, the programme will adopt a decentralised approach, making training accessible to young people across the country, from major cities to rural communities.
