Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has expressed his desire to start more matches but says he understands the realities of football and is always prepared to make an impact whenever called upon.
The Coventry City striker played a crucial role in Ghana’s opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, coming off the bench to provide the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic winning goal against Panama.
Yirenkyi’s late strike secured a 1-0 victory for the Black Stars, ending a seven-game winless run and earning Ghana all three points in their Group L opener.
Reflecting on his contribution after the match, Thomas-Asante said his primary focus was helping the team secure victory.
“I just wanted to do what I did really. I would have probably liked a goal as well, but the main thing was the win,” he said.
The forward noted that throughout his career he has often been called upon from the bench and has learned the importance of being ready to influence games whenever opportunities arise.
“My style of play means that even if I’m on the bench, there’s often an opportunity to come on and impact the game. Obviously, I want to start every game, but in my career you learn that that’s not always how football works,” he stated.
“You have to be ready for any occasion, and today my job was to try and impact the game from the bench. I’m happy that I could contribute in some way.”
Thomas-Asante was quick to credit his teammates for their efforts before his introduction, highlighting Ghana’s disciplined defensive display and resilience throughout the contest.
“It’s about the team performance because to get to that point at 0-0, defending solidly and creating a few chances, that is what the team did before I came on. Credit to them and to Caleb for the goal,” he added.
Following his impressive substitute appearance against Panama, Thomas-Asante will be hoping he has done enough to earn a place in the starting lineup when Ghana face England in their second Group L match.
