The Central East Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals suspected of operating an online vehicle sale scam that allegedly defrauded a buyer of more than GH¢100,000 through a fraudulent social media advertisement.
The suspects, identified as 31-year-old Chidubem Oba Precious and 28-year-old Ama Mankye, were arrested on June 12 following investigations into a complaint lodged with the Kasoa District Police Command.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Affairs Unit, police said the complainant reported that he had responded to a TikTok advertisement on February 10 promoting the sale of a Jetour hybrid vehicle for US$8,800.
The vehicle was advertised under the name “Shipper China Qinghai Hongmeng Auto Mobile Sale.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the complainant made two separate payments in December 2025 into bank accounts linked to the suspects. The first payment of GH¢46,895 was made on December 9, followed by a second payment of GH¢53,428 on December 18, bringing the total amount allegedly lost to GH¢100,323.
Police said the complainant was subsequently issued a bill of lading after making the payments. However, investigations later established that the document was fraudulent.
Further investigations led officers to Adawukwa, a suburb of Bawjiase in the Central Region, where Chidubem Oba Precious was arrested on June 12.
A search conducted at his residence reportedly uncovered an ATM card and a mobile SIM card registered in the name of Ama Mankye, as well as a receipt confirming payment made by the complainant.
According to police, information provided by Chidubem Oba Precious subsequently led to the arrest of Ama Mankye at Agbogba in Accra.
Investigators have since established that Ama Mankye allegedly opened a bank account in her name to receive funds from the complainant on behalf of Chidubem Oba Precious.
Police allege that she performed that role in exchange for GH¢1,000.
The two suspects appeared before the Ofaakor Circuit Court on June 15. Chidubem Oba Precious was remanded into police custody, while Ama Mankye was granted bail in the sum of GH¢70,000 with one surety, who must justify the bond with landed property.
Both accused persons are expected to reappear before the court on June 29.
Meanwhile, police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend a third suspect, identified as Theresa Ziam, who remains at large.
The Central East Regional Police Command has urged anyone who may have been affected by the suspects’ alleged online vehicle sale activities to report to the Regional Command or the nearest police station.
“The Regional Police Command further wishes to assure the general public of its resolve to arrest persons who commit these crimes to face justice,” the statement said.
