Three persons have lost their lives with some 15 others sustaining injuries after a violent confrontation hit New Winneba in the Central Region on Monday, August 31, morning.
The injured victims, including a police officer, are currently receiving medical care at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed.
Police reports indicate that at about 10:40 a.m., a mob of nearly 300 persons wielding firearms, stones, machetes and clubs from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze invaded the New Winneba Township.
The rampaging group is said to have assaulted residents and destroyed shops and other properties belonging to locals.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Command and Agona Swedru District Patrol teams were quickly dispatched to the scene to bring the situation under control.
To strengthen operations on the ground, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the deployment of more officers from the National Headquarters, with support from two armoured vehicles.
The Police say calm has since been restored and officers remain on the ground to avert any reprisal, assuring that investigations are ongoing and updates will be provided in due course.
