The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it will announce new transport fares by the end of the week following the latest increase in fuel prices.
The union’s Deputy Spokesperson, Samuel Amoah, said the adjustment had become necessary as operators face rising costs of fuel, spare parts, lubricants and taxes.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, September 1, Mr Amoah said the union had proposed a 30% increase in fares at a meeting in August.
The proposal was suspended after the government announced a GH¢2 reduction in diesel prices and assured transport operators that further measures would help reduce operating costs.
Mr Amoah said the expected relief did not materialise during the second pricing window in August, while operating expenses continued to rise.
He said the latest fuel price increase had left the union with little choice but to review fares.
The GPRTU will assess the new fuel prices before deciding whether to maintain the proposed 30% increase or adopt a lower adjustment.
“By the end of this week, something will come out for our drivers and then our passengers to also comply with,” he said.
Mr Amoah stressed that rising transport costs were not driven by fuel prices alone, citing increases in spare parts, lubricants and taxes as additional pressures on operators.
