The Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has confirmed that three people have died following the collapse of a three-storey building at Accra New Town, as rescue efforts continue at the scene.
The incident occurred on Sunday at an uncompleted structure within the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, a site also used for Christian worship activities.
While initial reports indicated two fatalities, the latest official update puts the death toll at three. Emergency teams worked through the night under floodlights to rescue victims trapped beneath the rubble.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and the National Ambulance Service have all been deployed to the site.
Mr Mubarak said authorities took extra steps to verify casualty figures before making them public, including cross-checking information with hospitals and emergency agencies.
Providing a breakdown, he disclosed that 23 people were involved in the incident, with three fatalities—a male and two females—while the remaining 20 are receiving treatment at various health facilities, including the Police Hospital, Mamobi Hospital and a private facility.
He added that women and minors make up a significant portion of those affected, noting that 15 of the victims are female and eight are male, with seven minors among them. None of the deceased, however, are minors.
The Minister commended emergency responders for their swift and sustained efforts, praising their overnight work at the scene.
Meanwhile, rescue operations are ongoing amid fears that more victims could still be trapped beneath the debris, with some reportedly heard calling for help earlier.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.
