The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has strongly condemned the reported assault of renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, describing the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
Her response follows reports that the artist—founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art and Red Clay Studio—was allegedly attacked on Saturday, March 21 by individuals believed to be members of a police Special Operations unit, commonly referred to as “Black Maria.”
According to the reports, Mr Mahama sustained injuries during the incident, including dental damage and the loss of a tooth. His uncle, who was driving at the time, is also said to have been injured.
In an open letter shared on Facebook on Sunday, March 22, Madam Gomashie expressed deep concern and extended her support to the artist, describing the incident as unfortunate and troubling.
She emphasised that such acts raise serious concerns about personal safety and respect for individual rights, stressing that the matter must be treated with urgency and seriousness in line with Ghana’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.
The Minister also disclosed that she has engaged Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. She noted that he has assured her of full support in identifying and holding those responsible accountable.
Reaffirming the government’s support, Madam Gomashie assured Mr Mahama of continued protection, highlighting the importance of his safety, well-being, and contributions to Ghana’s creative arts sector and the global cultural landscape.
