The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced new measures to strengthen the SIM re-registration process, including the introduction of one-time password (OTP) verification to confirm user consent.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation in collaboration with the NCA to roll out a new nationwide SIM registration exercise aimed at curbing fraud and identity misuse.
Under the revised system, individuals will be required to authorise the registration of any additional SIM cards linked to their identification details through an OTP sent directly to them. This measure is expected to prevent the unauthorised use of personal information, a key concern raised during previous registration exercises.
Authorities say the introduction of OTP verification will improve transparency and accountability by ensuring that all SIM registrations are explicitly approved by the rightful owners of identification documents. It is also intended to reduce incidents where SIM cards registered in the names of unsuspecting individuals are used for criminal activities.
The NCA has urged the public to remain vigilant and safeguard their personal data as preparations intensify for the upcoming exercise.
Speaking on TV3 Ghana on Sunday, March 22, 2026, the NCA’s Director-General, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, cautioned against allowing others to use their identification documents for SIM registration.
He emphasised that under the new system, receiving and using the OTP serves as confirmation that the individual has personally approved the registration, reinforcing the importance of consent in the process.
