TTAG Demands Suspension of Teacher Recruitment Exercise Over “Unfair” Conditions

The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana has called on the government to immediately suspend the ongoing teacher recruitment exercise, citing what it describes as inequitable and distressing conditions affecting trainee teachers nationwide.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the association outlined five key demands, with the suspension of the recruitment process as its primary concern. It cautioned that failure by authorities to respond within its stated ultimatum could result in nationwide demonstrations.

TTAG argued that the limited number of available positions—approximately 7,000—has exacerbated the challenges faced by trained teachers, many of whom have remained unemployed for several years. The association highlighted as particularly problematic the current arrangement in which graduates from three different cohorts are competing for the same limited number of vacancies.

According to TTAG, this approach has intensified hardship among qualified teachers and risks excluding a significant number of graduates from employment. The group maintained that the situation reflects a systemic imbalance between the number of trained teachers and available positions.

In addition, TTAG called on government to engage relevant stakeholders and develop a more equitable recruitment framework. It emphasised the need for a distribution mechanism that better aligns with the increasing number of trained teachers entering the system annually, thereby ensuring fairness and transparency in the recruitment process.
