The Wenchi Magistrate Court has remanded two young men into prison custody for allegedly assaulting an 18-year-old to death after accusing him of stealing a mobile phone in Wenchi in the Bono Region.
The suspects, Mufatawu Seidu, 18, an electrician, and Salifu Abubakar, 22, a sprayer, are accused of murdering Ibrahim Abu during an alleged mob assault.
They are expected to reappear before the court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Issah Wahab, on Monday, August 17, 2026, while police continue efforts to arrest other suspects believed to have participated in the attack.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector John Agyare told the court that the case was reported to the Wenchi Police Station on July 31, 2026, by the deceased’s mother, Hawa Seidu, a trader, accompanied by Sadia Yusif.
According to the prosecution, Ibrahim Abu returned home on July 22 and informed his mother that he had been attacked by a group of about 15 young men led by a suspect identified only as “Achimota,” who accused him of stealing a mobile phone.
Chief Inspector Agyare alleged that the suspect known as “Achimota,” who remains on the run, repeatedly shocked the deceased with a taser during the assault, leaving him with severe bodily pains.
The prosecution said that on July 31, nine days after the alleged attack, Ibrahim Abu collapsed at about 9:00 a.m. and was rushed to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers who visited the hospital found the deceased’s body on a stretcher outside the mortuary, covered with a bed sheet.
The body has since been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy, while investigations continue.
Police say a manhunt is underway to arrest the suspect known as “Achimota” and other alleged accomplices who remain at large.
