The University of Ghana has announced an immediate suspension of all social gatherings on campus due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases. This decision comes after the university confirmed a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus on June 23, prompting the health directorate to advise members of the university community to take precautionary measures.
The university’s health directorate reported both suspected and confirmed cases within the campus environment, leading to a reactivation of health protocols and increased vigilance. In a statement, the university urged all staff, students, and visitors to remain vigilant and adhere to recommended preventive measures, stating:
“All staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the recommended preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and community spread.”
The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has directed all student organizations, including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, Students’ Representative Council, Junior Common Rooms, and departmental associations, to cancel all scheduled events and celebrations until further notice. According to Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs:
“These measures have become necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of the University community.”
The university authorities are urging students and campus organisations to fully comply with the directive and support efforts to contain the spread of the virus. The ban on social gatherings aims to protect the health and well-being of the university community….not that long the headline
