The United States Embassy in Accra has announced that it will temporarily suspend most routine consular services from July 20 to July 31, 2026, to carry out scheduled maintenance at its facilities.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 14, the Embassy said normal consular operations are expected to resume on Monday, August 3, 2026, and urged travellers and individuals with pending consular matters to plan ahead to avoid inconvenience.
According to the Embassy, the temporary suspension will affect most non-emergency consular services during the maintenance period.
Among the services that will be unavailable are walk-in notarial services and Consular Reports of Death Abroad, which will resume once normal operations recommence in August.
Despite the temporary reduction in services, the Embassy said some essential consular functions will continue.
Applicants who have already received email notifications confirming that their U.S. passports or Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA) are ready for collection will still be able to pick up their documents on Thursdays between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The Embassy also confirmed that adult passport renewal applications submitted through its drop-box service will continue to be processed throughout the maintenance period. Applicants have been advised to follow the guidance provided on the Embassy’s official website.
Emergency consular assistance for U.S. citizens in Ghana will remain fully available. Americans requiring urgent support have been encouraged to contact the Embassy’s duty officer through its emergency telephone line.
The Embassy further advised the public to monitor its official website for updates on the restoration of full services and any additional operational changes.
The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Accra provides a range of services to U.S. citizens and visa applicants, including passport issuance and renewal, registration of births abroad, notarial services, emergency assistance and other citizenship-related services.
The Embassy noted that while routine services will be temporarily scaled down during the maintenance period, emergency assistance will continue uninterrupted.
It urged travellers, U.S. citizens and other clients with pending consular matters to make the necessary arrangements before the temporary suspension takes effect on July 20.
