The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will not protect Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, if he is found guilty of alleged sexual abuse of 19 female students.
General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the NDC is committed to establishing the truth and will not interfere in investigations into the allegations against Mr. Abdulai.
Mr. Abdulai, who until recently was Juaben NDC Constituency Secretary and an aspiring constituency chairman, has stepped down from his position.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, October 22, Mr. Kwetey stressed that the party would accept the outcome of the probe and would not shield anyone because of political affiliation.
“We want the truth to be brought out and we want to tackle the truth. And the country would have clear assurance that as a party and as a government, we do not cover anybody,” he said.
The party’s stance comes after controversy surrounding Mr. Abdulai’s attempt to contest the Juaben constituency chairmanship.
The NDC had initially cleared him to contest after rescinding an earlier directive for him to step aside. However, it reversed the decision again after reviewing full details of an investigative exposé by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.
Mr. Kwetey explained that the party had not seen the full disclosures in Manasseh’s videos and recordings during its first meeting on the matter.
He said after watching the materials, the party reconsidered its position, noting that the NDC does not condone sexual misconduct and abuse. Mr. Abdulai has since withdrawn his bid to contest the chairmanship.
