A 26-year-old woman has been found dead inside a container shop at the Effiduase Airport community in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region, while her mother and a 12-year-old girl were rushed to hospital after they were discovered unconscious and critically ill.
The deceased has been identified as Freda Agyeiwaa Benson.
Her mother, Leticia Bamfoa, and the 12-year-old girl, identified only as Juliet, were taken to the Eastern Regional Hospital after they were found inside the shop. Freda was pronounced dead on arrival, while the two survivors remain on admission receiving treatment.
According to reports, Juliet was vomiting blood when she was rescued.
Speaking to the media, Freda’s fiancé, Kofi Boakye, said the three had spent Friday evening preparing food outside the container shop ahead of a relative’s wedding scheduled for the weekend before retiring to sleep inside the structure.
He explained that concern was raised the following morning after repeated attempts to get their attention went unanswered.
Neighbours and relatives eventually forced open the door and found Freda and her mother unconscious, while Juliet was conscious but in a critically weakened condition. The three were immediately transported to the hospital.
Mr. Boakye said preliminary laboratory tests have ruled out suspected food poisoning. He added that doctors have indicated that further investigations, including an autopsy on Freda’s body, will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Community sources also disclosed that there is an ongoing land dispute involving the parcel on which the container shop is located. They further alleged that Freda had previously received threats.
However, no link has been established between those claims and the incident.
Although the incident occurred near the Effiduase District Police Command, the family has yet to file an official complaint to enable police to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
