A journalist at Kumasi’s Wontumi FM, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, has secured bail after two weeks in police detention. He was picked up on August 12, 2025, and charged with offensive conduct for allegedly spreading false news intended to spark fear and panic.
The court set bail at GH₵100,000 with two civil servant sureties. Asare’s lawyers are working to finalize the bail conditions. He’s due back in court on September 1, 2025.
On his show, Asare claimed President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash that killed eight people. Prosecutors opposed bail due to ongoing investigations. Judge Samuel Bright Acquah granted bail, citing judicial precedent in a similar case involving insults against a former president.
