Kofi Tonto Slams Mahama For GHC73 Billion Sole-Sourced Contracts In 7 Months

Kofi Tonto, a political aide and spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has come forward with a scathing critique of former President John Dramani Mahama’s government.

In a Facebook post today, Tonto accused Mahama of breaking a significant promise he made during his campaign—one aimed at ending the abuse of sole-sourced contracts.

“ Kofi Tonto said President Mahama, the man who promised to end the abuse of sole-sourced contracts when he was voted into government, and, at the very least, reduce them to the barest minimum, has failed to fulfill his promise and is even doing worse. ” Tonto began in his post. However, the political aide claims that, contrary to Mahama’s previous pledges, the government is continuing and, in fact, accelerating its use of sole-sourced contracts.

“Under his government, not only have various institutions resorted mainly to sole-sourced contracts; the Ministry of Roads and Highways has ABUSED sole-sourcing,” Tonto wrote. He pointed out that, in the last seven months, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, under the leadership of Kwame Agbodza, has awarded 81 sole-sourced contracts worth a staggering GHC73 billion (approximately $7 billion). These were awarded without competitive bidding, and the remainder of contracts were granted through selective tendering.

Tonto did not hold back in his criticism of Mahama’s actions, emphasizing that under his leadership, competitive tendering was practically non-existent. “Under President Mahama, not even one competitive tendering contract has been awarded,” he stated.

The political aide further accused Mahama of misrepresenting his stance on sole-sourcing when he was in opposition, adding, “The government that proclaimed in Parliament that the era of sole-sourced contracts is dead has revived it and is feeding it fat.”
