The Accra High Court has granted bail to NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, after he was earlier remanded following his arraignment over charges of false publication.
Abronye appeared before the court on a bail application pending trial, moved by his lawyer, former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who was led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
“We move in terms of the motion paper and pray that the applicant be granted bail pending trial,” counsel for the applicant argued.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, said the Republic did not oppose the request.
The court then granted Abronye bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
Under the bail terms, the court directed the NPP spokesperson to report to the Police CID every two weeks, hand over all travel documents, and avoid leaving the country without the Registrar’s express approval.
Abronye’s prior remand drew backlash from parts of the NPP and some legal analysts, who claimed the move violated his constitutional rights. But the presiding judge, explaining the reason for the remand order, noted that the court was guided by concerns that the accused might commit another offence if released immediately.
