Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a scathing attack on the recent National Security raids on the homes of former government officials, warning President John Mahama that such actions threaten to tarnish his image and undermine Ghana’s democracy.
The raids, which targeted former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, have sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the actions as a blatant attempt to intimidate opposition figures.
Afenyo-Markin accused the government of using state security agencies to harass political opponents, describing the raids as an assault on democracy. He called on Mahama to take immediate action to rein in his operatives, warning that such actions could erode public trust in state institutions and damage Ghana’s democratic credentials.
The Minority Leader’s criticism comes after Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai, defended the raids, claiming they were sanctioned and carried out within the law. However, this explanation has been met with skepticism, with many arguing that the raids are part of a broader political agenda aimed at silencing opposition voices.
Afenyo-Markin’s warning to Mahama is clear: “Abusing the rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy… Please reign in your HAWKS now!”
