Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has had her lawyers file an appeal against the 15-year prison sentence handed down by the Circuit Court in Accra. Agradaa was convicted on July 3 for defrauding people through false pretenses and charlatanic advertisements, including a money-doubling scheme for which she was also fined GH¢300.
Lead counsel Richard Asare Baffour announced on July 7 that the appeal has been lodged with the High Court, seeking to overturn both the conviction and sentence. Baffour described the judgment as “unreasonable” and claimed the trial was flawed, stating that the judge showed bias by intimidating and harassing Agradaa.
The legal team also plans to file a bail application soon to secure Agradaa’s temporary release while the appeal process continues. Baffour emphasized that the sentence was excessive, especially considering the amount involved was just GH¢540, and suggested that Agradaa’s public image influenced the court’s decision.
Key Points of the Appeal:
- Unreasonable Judgment: Agradaa’s lawyers argue that the evidence presented did not support the conviction.
- Manifest Bias: The legal team claims the judge demonstrated bias during the trial.
- Excessive Sentence: The 15-year sentence is considered too harsh, given the circumstances.
The appeal process is expected to unfold in the coming days, with Agradaa’s lawyers pushing for a more lenient punishment.
