The Transport Ministry has defended the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge, saying it was crucial for upgrading Ghana’s airports to match regional standards.
Effective April 1, 2026, the levy charges intercontinental travellers $50-$100, while domestic passengers pay GH₵100.
The Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, stated that funds will improve the airport’s sewerage system, build a hotel, and expand parking.
“All over in the sub-region, our airports are in very deplorable states. From 2012, Ghana Airport Company Limited did not make any comprehensive levies or charges to upgrade our airports.”
Mr. Nikpe added, “Our sewerage treatment plant is 25 years old, almost full to its capacity… We need a new car park.” However, minority MPs on the Roads and Highways Committee argue the charge is unjustified, saying passengers already pay for airport facilities.Nikpe announced plans to build three new airports in Sunyani, Wa, and Bolgatanga to boost economic activity and sub-regional connectivity
