The Minister of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, says Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies will soon be required to air their meetings live on local radio.
According to him, the directive is to deepen openness and accountability at the local level and enable residents to follow and engage with decisions taken on their behalf.
He was speaking at a breakfast meeting with development partners and heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry in Accra.
Mr. Ayariga noted that the Ministry will partner local FM stations to make assembly sittings accessible to the people they represent.
He stressed that MMDAs are the local equivalent of Parliament and their deliberations should therefore be as open as those of the national legislature.
“Every assembly meeting must be aired live on the local FM stations because assemblies are local legislative bodies.
Their proceedings must be transparent and open to the localities, just as proceedings of the national assembly are open,” he said on Wednesday, September 30.
He added that the Ministry was already supporting regional broadcasters and plans to use those channels to bring local governance closer to citizens.
The move, he said, was part of broader reforms to boost citizen participation and ensure accountability in local governance.
