The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed shops, markets and other commercial establishments within its jurisdiction to close from 6:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 3, for the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.
The exercise will also mark Ghana’s commemoration of the 2026 World Cleanup Day, with the AMA hosting the national flagship event.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday, September 30, the Assembly urged residents, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders to participate in desilting drains, sweeping streets, collecting refuse and cleaning public spaces and business premises.
The notice was signed by the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, will lead the national event under the theme, “National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact.” The exercise forms part of the government’s Clean Up Ghana Agenda.
Activities will take place across the Assembly’s three sub-metropolitan areas. In Ashiedu Keteke, teams will focus on London Market and Rawlings Park, while Tuesday Market and Camara will be the main locations in Ablekuma South. The Okaikoi South exercise will centre on Circle Neoplan.
Businesses are expected to use the six-hour closure to clean their surroundings and support the wider exercise.
The Assembly warned that Public Health Officers, popularly known as Sama-Sama, and the AMA Sanitation Task Force would monitor participation and enforce compliance. Those who fail to comply could face prosecution and other penalties prescribed by law.
Traders and business operators have been urged to make arrangements ahead of the exercise to minimise disruption.
The AMA also appealed to corporate institutions, non-governmental organisations, community groups, religious bodies, youth groups and schools to participate and help mobilise volunteers.
“The AMA reiterates that maintaining a clean city cannot be achieved by the Assembly alone and requires sustained participation from residents and other stakeholders,” the statement said.
The Assembly urged the public to maintain clean surroundings beyond the exercise to support a healthier environment.
