The Assemblyman for Oforikrom, Hon. Amankwa Emmanuel, has lauded the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah, for initiating projects to improve education and sanitation in the municipality.
The commendation came after the MCE cut sod on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, for a new three-unit classroom block for Suhum Oforikrom Ghanata JHS to replace its dilapidated structure which had been in a deplorable state for years.
The project will include three classrooms, a staff common room, a four-seater toilet facility, a borehole and other ancillary facilities to provide a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The poor state of the old block had been a major worry to the school community, with academic work often disrupted whenever it rained.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Amankwa, an old student and former School Prefect of the 2004 batch, said he was delighted about the intervention.
“Today is a happy day for me and the people of Oforikrom. God bless our MCE for this beautiful gesture because the school has been in a deplorable state for a very long time. We spoke to our MCE about the deplorable state of the school, she listened and has walked the talk to do this for us because this school has brought a lot of people up,” he said.
He said the school, established in the 1990s, had deteriorated to the point where students had to close during rainfall.
He noted that Ghanata JHS has been a key feeder school for pupils from primary schools without Junior High facilities, serving many communities within Suhum township.
“I’m happy today, and I thank the MCE and her team for putting up a new block for us at Oforikrom,” he added.
On the same day, the MCE also cut sod for the paving of the Suhum Ayekotse Urban Council premises and the construction of a four-seater toilet facility to improve sanitation and the condition of the public space in the Nartey Anomah electoral area.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Sarah said Ghanata JHS has served Suhum for many years but its infrastructure had become unacceptable, hence the need for a replacement.
On the Ayekotse project, she said the area hosts many events but is in poor condition, and the Assembly plans to pave it and build stores around it to preserve the facility.
“These projects are a testament to our ongoing efforts to build a better Suhum together. We are committed to investing in education, health and sanitation, the pillars of a thriving community. We believe that by improving our infrastructure, we are creating opportunities for growth and prosperity for everyone in Suhum,” she stated.
The sod-cutting forms part of ongoing projects by the Suhum Municipal Assembly, including the Adarkwa CHPS Compound and Nurses’ Quarters; the Bono Densuso KG Block, Staff Common Room, Kids Eatery and four-seater toilet; and the Nankese Amanfrom CHPS Compound.
The Assembly says it remains committed to working with stakeholders to provide quality infrastructure and essential services to improve learning, healthcare, sanitation and public infrastructure across the municipality.
