Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has suspended parliamentary sittings for three days to allow the Parliamentary Chamber to host an African parliamentary conference focused on issues relating to LGBTQ rights and family values.
The conference, which is taking place in Parliament’s main debating chamber, has brought together parliamentary leaders and representatives from across the continent to discuss what organisers describe as growing external influences on African cultural and family values.
The event is expected to run until the end of the week, during which time parliamentary business has been temporarily put on hold.
The gathering comes amid heightened debate across Africa over legislation concerning LGBTQ issues, with several countries either considering or implementing stricter legal measures.
In Ghana, the discussion has intensified following Parliament’s recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025. The legislation has attracted significant attention both domestically and internationally and remains at the centre of ongoing public and political debate.
Despite the bill’s passage on Friday, May 29, 2026, Speaker Bagbin has called on Parliament to revisit aspects of the legislation as part of the ongoing legislative process.
Parliament is expected to resume its normal sittings after the conclusion of the conference.
