The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 27-year-old man for unlawful possession of an assault rifle in Bawku in the Upper East Region.
The suspect, identified as Abdul Basit, was picked up on April 13, 2026, after a military patrol team intercepted him during an operation at Sakabo, a suburb of the conflict-prone area.
According to the police, the patrol team was responding to reports of gunshots when they traced the source to a location where the suspect was spotted fleeing into a room. He was pursued and arrested.
A subsequent search of the room led to the retrieval of an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 31 rounds of ammunition.
Police say the suspect, during interrogation, admitted ownership of the weapon.
He is currently in custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be put before court.
The arrest comes amid ongoing security operations in Bawku, as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on the proliferation of illegal weapons and restore calm in the area.
