The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has made it clear that the daily running of health facilities falls to management, not to boards or individual board members.
The Minister noted that knowing the distinct roles of Boards and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) was key to sound governance and to stopping interference in the everyday operations of institutions.
“The day-to-day running of the institution is not the responsibility of the Board or Board members,” he said on day two of the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, where attendees are receiving lessons on corporate governance and board functions.
He added that strong governance was vital for making sure national resources were properly deployed to enhance the welfare of citizens.
He also reaffirmed his drive to ensure health agencies are backed by Legislative Instruments (LIs) to support proper governance and efficient administration.
Mr Akandoh further called on health institutions to be more careful with public funds, especially spending on seminars, training and trips, and said decisions must take into account the nation’s limited resources.
According to him, the training will help participants grasp governance standards, steer clear of institutional breaches, and take decisions that uphold accountability and sound management. He urged all participants to take part fully in the sessions and to get a firm understanding of their specific duties and responsibilities.
