Ghana and the Netherlands have signed a Letter of Intent aimed at boosting joint action against illegal drugs and narcotics markets.
The deal was signed by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Netherlands’ Minister of Justice and Security, D.M. Van Weel, during Mr. Van Weel’s official visit to Ghana.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa said the pact follows the Accra Call to Action and is designed to expand global partnership in confronting the illegal drug trade.
He noted that both nations want to take a leading role in tackling the drug menace, which he described as ruining young people’s futures, damaging public health, eroding the rule of law and threatening human rights.
“We are confident that genuine and reliable international collaboration will eliminate drug markets flooding our countries with cocaine, synthetics and criminal money,” Mr Ablakwa said.
He thanked the Dutch Minister for his visit and called him a friend. The agreement is part of broader efforts by the two countries to tighten cooperation against illicit drug syndicates and the criminal operations linked to the trade.
