The Ministry of Health has launched a three-day mid-year assessment of the government’s major health commitments contained in the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto.
The session kicked off in Ho on Saturday, August 15, 2026, under the leadership of Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. It has brought together heads of departments, agencies and programmes operating under the Ministry.
In a statement released on Saturday, August 15, the Ministry explained that the goal of the exercise was to evaluate progress, pinpoint obstacles and improve delivery on the administration’s health pledges.
Priority areas being examined include the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, widely called MahamaCare, the broadening of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), upgrading of health facilities and the rollout of specialist nursing courses.
“All heads of agencies and programmes under the Ministry will present updates on their respective areas, highlighting achievements, challenges and measures required to accelerate implementation,” the statement noted.
The Ministry will also review developments on building regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, setting up cataract centres, regularising stipends for nursing trainees and hiring more health workers.
The status of stalled health projects will equally be discussed, with agency heads required to report on gains, difficulties and steps needed to speed up execution.
As part of the three-day forum, attendees will undergo training in Public Financial Management to encourage prudent use of state funds and boost accountability in the health sector.
According to the Ministry, the review is meant to ensure the government’s health promises are carried out effectively to expand access to quality, affordable and fair healthcare nationwide.
