Residents of Gomoa Fetteh, a farming community in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, are living in fear and panic after armed landguards and thugs, allegedly backed by some police officers, attacked homes and properties in the area.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, March 21, 2025, has forced some residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighbouring communities. The attackers, numbering around 40, were reportedly armed with cutlasses, machetes, guns, hammers, metals, and sticks.
According to the residents, the landguards, allegedly supported by the Gomoa Ojobi District Police Command, stormed homes and vandalised properties, including canopies, chairs, tables, sound systems, and food items. The attackers also prevented the elders of the Gomoa Fetteh Abor Twidan Royal family from holding a funeral ceremony for the late Rev. Odartey Lamptey.
The residents accused the Gomoa Ojobi District Police Commander, (DSP) Samuel Asante, of backing the landguards and thugs. They claimed that DSP Asante had told them to obey Kofi Baah, who claims to be the Paramount Chief of Gomoa Fetteh, and warned that if they didn’t, they would be responsible for any consequences.
The residents stated that they had lodged a complaint with the Gomoa Ojobi District Police Command about the threats from the landguards, but no action was taken. Instead, DSP Asante allegedly told them that Kofi Baah was the recognized chief of Gomoa Fetteh, and that they should obey him.
The residents expressed their disappointment and frustration with the police commander’s actions, stating that they had lost trust in the police. They called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to investigate the matter and take action against DSP Asante and the landguards.
DSP Asante, however, denied the allegations, stating that he had not assigned police officers to provide security protection to the landguards. He also claimed that he had deployed a police patrol team to the area and had tried to resolve the issue between the funeral committee and the Abor Twidan Royal family.
The residents remain skeptical, and the situation in Gomoa Fetteh remains tense. The community is calling for justice and protection from the authorities.
