The Editor of Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has lambasted the five-member committee that recommended the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, calling their work “shoddy” and “below standard.”
This criticism follows President John Dramani Mahama’s removal of Justice Torkornoo from office, citing Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
The process began with a petition filed on March 17, 2025, by Daniel Ofori, accusing the former Chief Justice of misconduct. After reviewing the petition and her response, the President formed the committee to investigate.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Mr. Darko questioned the credibility of some petitions considered by the committee.
“Their job was shoddy, below standard,” he said, citing a petition related to a staff transfer within the judiciary as an example.
“That’s a labour dispute, not a removal process,” Mr. Darko argued, adding that the committee’s consideration of such a petition undermined the process’s seriousness.
Mr. Darko’s comments highlight concerns about the committee’s handling of the removal process and its implications for the judiciary.
