The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, has slammed Energy Minister, John Jinapor, for his handling of the country’s energy crisis, accusing him of resorting to fear-mongering instead of offering solutions.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, which was monitored by Ghanaian RADAR at the weekend, Mr. Kabiru criticised Jinapor’s approach, saying: “Since he assumed office, it has been one alarm after the other… He should stop the scaremongering and be more of a hope monger.”
He suggested that Jinapor’s tactics were motivated by a desire to justify sole-sourcing contracts worth over GH₵200 million without following proper procurement procedures.
The energy sector is indeed facing significant challenges, with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition revealing a GH₵1.1 billion funding gap for liquid fuel purchases and a GH₵2 billion monthly deficit.
To this end, the Walewale MP urged Mr. Jinapor to focus on building public confidence and restoring stability in the energy sector, rather than generating panic.
