An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 35-year-old Nana Adwoa Yamoah, a self-styled spiritualist, to three years’ imprisonment for defrauding a man of GH¢95,100.
Yamoah, who operated from Teshie in Accra, pleaded guilty to charges of defrauding by false pretences and practising without the required registration and licence.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong told the court, presided over by Dennis Eyram Fumey, that the complainant, Mr. Douglas Abu, is unemployed and resides at Ntotroso in the Ashanti Region.
According to the prosecution, Abu was introduced to Yamoah in 2025 by a witness, Grace Fosua, who presented her as a spiritualist. Yamoah subsequently claimed she had connections with the Asantehene and could facilitate Abu’s enstoolment as chief of Ntotroso.
Relying on these representations, Abu paid various sums of money to Yamoah, who assured him he would be installed as chief by January. She also collected an additional GH¢51,000 under the pretext of doubling the amount, which she failed to do.
The court further heard that Yamoah convinced Abu to travel with her to Benin for purported spiritual fortification at his own expense, but no such exercise took place.
Suspicions arose when Yamoah failed to fulfil her promises, prompting Abu to demand a refund. Following her refusal to repay the money, the matter was reported to the police, leading to her arrest on March 9, 2026.
Investigations revealed that Yamoah was not registered with the Traditional Medicine Practice Council and had used similar schemes to defraud other individuals.
She was convicted on her own plea. Sentencing was initially deferred pending a pregnancy test, which returned negative, after which the court imposed a three-year custodial sentence.
