Ghana’s cultural heritage has taken the spotlight in the Russian capital, where President John Dramani Mahama has visited Woven Meanings, an exhibition showcasing the history, artistry and symbolism of the country’s celebrated kente textile.

Hosted at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts, the exhibition offers Russian audiences an opportunity to explore one of Ghana’s most distinctive cultural expressions, whose intricate patterns, vibrant colours and symbolic designs have become enduring markers of national identity.

The exhibition was organised with the participation of the Centre for Public Diplomacy (CPD), with the direct assistance of the Russian House of the Centre for Public Diplomacy in Ghana. It forms part of the International Festival of African Culture and Cinema, Africa: Together into the Future, and the cultural programme of the Third Russia-Africa Summit.

During his visit, President Mahama explored the exhibition’s presentation of kente weaving, including samples of the traditional textile and a weaving loom of the type still used by artisans in the Kumasi area.

Two particularly significant exhibits were a kente cloak associated with Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and another belonging to President Mahama himself. Together, the pieces offer a historical connection between Ghana’s political heritage, cultural identity and continuing traditions of craftsmanship.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, kente carries layers of meaning. Its patterns and colour combinations communicate historical narratives, social values and cultural traditions, with knowledge of the craft passed down through generations of skilled weavers.

The exhibition also demonstrates the textile’s continuing relevance, showing how traditional Ghanaian craftsmanship has found expression in contemporary fashion, design and wider cultural conversations.

Reflecting on the significance of the exhibition, President Mahama emphasised that cultural understanding was essential to building lasting relationships between countries.

“Although we have established intergovernmental contacts and relations between our two countries, the strongest and most enduring ties are those between people. And these ties can only be strengthened through an understanding of each other’s cultures,” he remarked.

The President expressed appreciation to the organisers and partners for bringing Ghana’s cultural heritage to Moscow. He also acknowledged the interest shown by Russian visitors and the availability of explanatory materials in Russian, which help audiences engage more meaningfully with the exhibits.

The exhibition appears to be making a considerable impression. Tatyana Rybkina, Director of the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts, disclosed that more than 11,000 people had visited in less than two weeks, reflecting significant public interest in Ghana’s textile traditions.

Dmitry Savelyev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Director General of the Centre for Public Diplomacy, highlighted the historical foundations of Russia-Ghana relations, particularly the educational links established during the Soviet era. He also expressed appreciation to the museum for its partnership and support in bringing the exhibition to life.

The involvement of the Russian House of the Centre for Public Diplomacy in Ghana underscores its commitment to promoting Ghanaian culture in Russia and strengthening humanitarian and cultural relations between the two countries. Its direct assistance in organising the exhibition has helped provide a platform for Ghana’s artistic heritage to reach a wider international audience.

The Moscow exhibition is also a reminder of the important place culture occupies in contemporary diplomacy. While government-to-government relations are often shaped by political and economic interests, cultural exchanges create opportunities for people to discover shared experiences, appreciate differences and develop connections beyond official engagements.

For Ghana, presenting kente on an international platform is an opportunity to tell a story that extends beyond the textile itself. It is a story of identity, history, ingenuity and the generations of artisans who have sustained one of Africa’s most recognisable weaving traditions.

Woven Meanings therefore represents more than an exhibition of traditional fabric. It is a celebration of Ghanaian identity and an illustration of how cultural diplomacy can bring countries and their people closer together.
