A fire has ravaged the family residence of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, destroying more than half of the rooms in the property and prompting an emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 5, in Tamale, where firefighters were dispatched after receiving a distress call at 3:29 p.m. According to the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO I Hudu Baba, emergency personnel arrived at the scene eight minutes later and immediately began efforts to contain the blaze.
Speaking to Channel One News, ADO I Hudu Baba said firefighters successfully rescued two schoolchildren who had become trapped inside one of the rooms before bringing the fire under control.
He disclosed that nine of the 17 rooms in the house were destroyed by the blaze. However, the prompt intervention of firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the remaining sections of the building, limiting further damage.
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation to establish the cause of the fire and determine the extent of losses suffered by the family.
The incident comes almost a year after Murtala Mohammed died in the military helicopter crash at Adansi in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
The helicopter, which was travelling from Accra to the Ashanti Region on an official assignment, crashed, killing all eight people on board.
Among the victims were Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye and three military personnel who formed the flight crew.
