The Tamale High Court has sentenced a former police officer and his accomplice to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour each after finding them guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with a high-profile armed robbery in Tamale.
The convicts, former General Corporal (G/Cpl) Suleman Ayuba Gbana, who was attached to the Tamale District Police Station, and Adam Siba, were convicted on July 20, 2026, following the conclusion of their trial.
The case stems from an armed robbery that occurred on April 15, 2020, at the entrance of the former Mum Hotel on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway. During the attack, armed robbers shot two foreign exchange dealers, Issahaku Sumaila and Baba Fuseini, before escaping with GH¢530,000 in cash and unspecified amounts of foreign currencies.
Investigations by the Northern Regional Police Command later linked Gbana to the robbery syndicate after one of the arrested suspects identified him as a member of the group.
A subsequent search of Gbana’s residence led to the recovery of a Ghana Police Service-issued pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, three pairs of handcuffs and a brown handbag.
According to the prosecution, the pistol had been issued to Gbana while serving as a police bodyguard. However, he unlawfully retained the weapon after he was transferred to another assignment.
Police arrested Gbana on April 23, 2020, and he was subsequently interdicted pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted and discharged a third accused person, Mohammed Iddrisu, on all charges.
The court also ordered that the pistol and ammunition admitted as exhibits during the trial be returned to the Ghana Police Service.
