Nollywood actor Daniel Etim Effiong has shared an emotional account of how his rustication from the Federal University of Technology, Minna became the unexpected catalyst for his career in film.
Speaking in an interview with Flame TV, Effiong recounted his internal struggle as an engineering student who felt drawn to the arts but had no clear idea how to transition.
He said that while studying at FUT Minna, he often questioned how he would move from engineering into filmmaking, having only acted in church productions. During one moment of prayer on campus, he said he felt assured that he would one day make films, even though the path seemed unclear.
That uncertainty soon gave way to crisis. In his first semester at 300 level, the university reportedly released a list of 150 alleged cult members slated for expulsion — and his name appeared on it.
Effiong described the experience as isolating and overwhelming. While his colleagues prepared for examinations, he faced the shock of possible expulsion. His parents rushed to the school seeking clarification, only to learn that he would have to go through disciplinary proceedings.
Amid the turmoil, a new opportunity emerged. He came across an audition form for the second season of Amstel Malta Box Office, a reality television programme designed to train aspiring performers. Having watched the first season, he decided to apply.
Shortly after his expulsion, he received an invitation to audition. He progressed through several stages of selection, eventually making it into the final 10 contestants chosen from across Nigeria. On the show, participants received training in acting, dancing, singing and stage performance.
Looking back, Effiong believes the sequence of events — painful as it was — marked a turning point. What initially felt like a devastating setback ultimately redirected him toward his calling.
He later made his directorial debut with The Herd, which has been described as Nigeria’s best cinema movie of 2025, further cementing his place in the industry.
Today, Daniel Etim Effiong is regarded as one of Nollywood’s notable leading men, with a body of work spanning film and television. His journey underscores how moments of uncertainty and loss can sometimes open doors to unexpected purpose.
